The Josephburg Community Church has a great history! It portrays the joys, sorrows and hardships that the descendants of our present generation endured. Prior to World War 1, there were many countries who belonged to Austria and the two German Villages of Josephburg & Brigadeau were part of many battles that were fought here.
Following the war, these villages were rebuilt. Due to the war, Austria was divided and was now in Poland. The population increased and the villages became too small, therefore they had to migrate to a place where they might establish themselves afresh.
It all started in 1887, when Mr. Geo Becker left Josephburg in Galicia, Austria for America in search of new land. He arrived in Halifax and continued onward to the Western Plains of Alberta.
His vision was clear, there were great opportunities ahead and he wrote to his family. From 1888 to 1890 more new settlers came and settled in what is known as Josephburg today.
In 1901, the men in the area held a meeting and succeeded in reaching an agreement by which all of the German speaking settlers were united in one congregation and because of all the foregone problems it was decided to call their congregation the "Peace Congregation".
Land was donated for a church and the first church was known as the Peace Congregation, however in 1923 it was renamed Josephburg Reformed Church.
The oldest organization in the Josephburg Community Church is the Josephburg Community Church Ladies Aid. This group of ladies was founded in 1899 and is still an active body today, 2019, some 120 years later. The denomination of the church has changed, but this group stayed faithful to the church. Throughout the 120 years, dedicated members were willing to serve the Lord and their Church in various ways. The biggest project taken on was the Josephburg Ladies Aid cookbook. The first edition was printed in 1959, the first of seven editions, and in 1980 a Canadian Best Seller Cookbook was published. Catering, large and small was another big money making event and proceeds went toward the maintenance of the parsonage and to Mission work. The famous Josephburg Church Supper was originally organized by the Josephburg Ladies Aid over 100 years ago.
